Graphic Elisava 2020

Lots of things tend to happen during a graphic.elisava master’s program. Mountains of research. Maybe one or two existential crises. Designing so much that you have nightmares about mismatched hex codes.

In some weird twist of fate, this year’s biggest ‘thing’ ended up being a global pandemic. We were forced to embrace digitalism over presentialism, do more with less, and channel disillusionment into positivity. In school, the lesson comes before the test, but life often takes the opposite approach. We think we’re better for it.

PLATFORM AND IDENTITY

For this year’s degree show we decided to continue the digitalist lifestyle that we’ve come to know. Pills replace name tags, thumbnails replace handshakes, and ingenuity replaces normality in order to illustrate how we view topics like “design ethics”, “comfort”, “manifestos”, and “freedom”.

Acknowledgements

Many thanks to this year’s students in the Graphic Design and the Editorial Design master’s degrees. The 2020 graphic.elisava Degree Show – both the platform and the campaign that precedes it – wouldn’t have been possible without the indefatigable work of a group of design students making time for it in the middle of their end-of-year presentations.

Project Information

Normo.

Towards a
new standard.

Normo tells stories that recognise the beauty in simplicity within a sustainable design system. We think it is possible to change the content from the form and we know there are a lot of projects that believe in the same principles. We’re here to tell you about some of them. Through sharp reporting, our stories balance a sense of healthy optimism with journalistic rigor, and find cause for hope. We are part an editorial project, part a manifesto, part a place to discuss a better world.

Normo believes we can all make a difference.

When choosing content it is vital to have a clear editorial line to guide the selection. In Our Vision we show our manifesto in a visual way. We cover topics like materiality, quality, sustainability and transparency for example.

Later, these topics are discussed in depth and they are linked with selected content in each of the categories. This is an important point for Normo: to show the relationship between clear convictions and their implementation.

Normo believes design projects have to satisfy our wellbeing but never forgeting the preservation of the environment, how their manufacturing influence the community and communicate this with honesty. We are not big on trends. We want you to enjoy your purchases for years, even decades, to come, trying to eliminate the concept of waste. For this reason we must reflect together on quality and uniqueness.

At Normo we know that change is not something that can be achieved individually. That is why we trust that we can find together more reflections and projects towards good design.

This is reflected on the platform, so that our invitation to the community to share their vision appears constantly on the web.

Through a form such as a conversation, we make it easier to propose new content and open debate with it.

When displaying the articles we play with different levels of information to allow us to glance throw it or read it in depth.
We seek to facilitate reading with large sizes and dosing the text in capsules. This is interspersed with the visual content, showing it in slides or in a full page view.
At the end, Normo recommends similar articles so you can continue browsing the web.

There is no better way to create community than taking advantage of social media. Normo seeks from the whole platform to promote the community in a multichannel way.

We organize the content of the platform to take full advantage of the virtues of each channel. While the web shows projects and articles in depth, we use Twitter to open debate and listen to opinions from different voices. For live interviews and audiovisual content we use Instagram.

We also facilitate sharing complete articles, images or text highlights from the web. In this way we ensure that there is a good diffusion of the content.

Normo. Towards a new standard.
